Dentistry historically has treated three different diseases. Caries, or as it is more commonly known, tooth decay. Periodontitis, or gum disease is an infection of the supporting structures of the tooth. Finally, malocclusions, or crooked teeth.
Tooth Decay
Bacteria that adhere to tooth structure form a plaque that may lead to tooth decay. They feed on the sugars and other fermentable carbohydrates in your diet. Acids are produced and dissolve the mineral content of teeth. Common methods of treatment include diet modification, removing the plaque, practicing excellent home care as well as removing the decay.
Gum Disease
Gum Disease is a bacterial infection that attacks the support structure of teeth. Here too, home care is important and can prevent the progression of the disease and loss of teeth. Gum treatments involve removing the bacterial plaque and may involve several different modalities.
Malocclusions
Crooked teeth are caused by a discrepancy in the size of the jawbone and teeth not allowing enough room for the teeth to fit properly. Braces and repositioning are the standard treatment here.

Why Nutrition?
The choices you make in life have a direct bearing on your overall health. If you choose to smoke for example, statistically you are at a higher risk for a bunch of diseases. Dental health is no different. If you eat a diet low in sugar and practice excellent home care your dental problems will be few.
